Our story

Tempo’s story goes back to 2006, when our team — then, part of TM Software, a custom web solutions development team headquartered in Reykjavík, in Iceland — was introduced to Atlassian’s portfolio of collaboration and project track solutions, including JIRA. This was the result of our company’s enthusiasm to introduce agile tools to its internal development teams, and at the same time, to help track issues and projects related to their development process.

Our developers loved JIRA, but were using an external platform to plan and track their time spent for client billing purposes, as well as for internal payroll. Being an agile company and relying on multiple tools without sufficient integration created a lot of hassle, headaches, wasted time, and even the possibility for inaccuracies.

Turning Risk into an Opportunity

The renowned financial collapse in 2008 hit TM Software hard, as well as most companies in Iceland. Instead of giving up and let the situation affect our operations, we decided to use the crisis to our advantage as we had more time to confront and tackle our problem. Here is where Tempo came to play.

In 2007, a lean handful of developers was assigned to build the time tracking solution we so badly needed, and we launched Tempo (now Tempo Timesheets) internally one year later. We soon saw an opportunity for other companies and their teams to benefit from our solution for JIRA, and launched the product internationally in 2009. Tempo was launched on the Atlassian Marketplace in 2012 and has been a top-selling solution ever since.

Tempo’s Expansion

Thanks to our initial successes, we’ve expanded our efforts to solve additional problems for our customers.

In January 2014, we launched Tempo Planner for JIRA, and in December the same year, we joined forces with FOLIO for JIRA, rebranding the solution as Tempo Folio in early 2015. We launched our latest solution, Tempo Books, in April 2015. Tempo Timesheets and Tempo Planner are currently available in the cloud, and we plan to launch Tempo Folio and Tempo Books in the cloud later this year.

Continued Growth

In January 2015, Tempo spun off from TM Software, enabling each company to better focus on their respective markets. Our team continues to grow, and today consists of approximately 70 employees, nearly doubling in size since June 2014. Our efforts span business development, development operations, marketing, customer success, cloud, mobile, QA, and support.

Today, we have approximately 6,000 customers in more than 100 countries. Our customers reach from lean startups to large-scale distributed enterprises. In addition, Tempo collaborates with more than 90 Atlassian Expert partners around the world to offer resale, training and consultancy for Atlassian and Tempo products in local languages.

Building Leadership

Tempo’s solutions have won a number of awards, and it is our goal to add even more to the collection in the future. Tempo Timesheets was the top Atlassian Marketplace add-on in 2012 and 2013, and remains in the top-ten. Tempo Planner was the top-grossing new Atlassian Marketplace add-on in 2014. Tempo Folio (previously FOLIO) was the winner of the Atlassian Codegeist competition in 2013.

Through our starter license program, as of July 2015, we’ll have donated nearly $85,000 to the fantastic Room to Read program, which is dedicated to improving literacy and gender equality in education in the developing world.

Stay tuned — we’ve got great things to come.
